Frequently Asked Questions

Cannabis Strains & Effects

What is the difference between indica, sativa, and hybrid strains?

Indica strains produce body-focused effects including relaxation, sedation, and pain relief. Sativa strains produce cerebral effects including energy, creativity, and mental stimulation. Hybrid strains combine indica and sativa genetics and deliver a blend of both body and mental effects. The ratio of indica to sativa genetics (e.g., 60/40 indica-dominant) determines which effects are more prominent. Terpene profiles provide a more accurate prediction of specific effects than the indica/sativa classification alone.

What are terpenes and why do they matter?

Terpenes are aromatic compounds produced by the cannabis plant that drive its flavor, aroma, and therapeutic effects. Myrcene produces relaxation and sedation. Linalool provides anxiety relief. Beta-caryophyllene supports pain relief. Limonene elevates mood. The terpene profile of a strain determines the specific effects you experience — two strains with identical THC content but different terpene profiles will produce noticeably different experiences. Lab test results at licensed dispensaries list the terpene profile for every product.

What does THC percentage mean?

THC percentage indicates the concentration of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol in a cannabis product. Higher THC means stronger psychoactive effects, but it does not mean a better experience. Moderate THC (15–20%) with a diverse terpene profile often provides more nuanced and enjoyable effects than high THC (25%+) with minimal terpene content. First-time users should start at 15–18% THC.

What is the entourage effect?

The entourage effect is the principle that cannabinoids (THC, CBD, CBG, CBN) and terpenes work together to amplify each other’s therapeutic effects. Full-spectrum cannabis products — flower, pre-rolls, and full-spectrum concentrates — preserve this natural interaction. Products that isolate individual cannabinoids may lose the synergistic benefits that the entourage effect provides.

What is couch-lock?

Couch-lock is a state of intense physical sedation where movement feels effortful and energy drops significantly. It is caused by high concentrations of the terpene myrcene combined with elevated THC levels (typically above 20%). Pure indica strains like Purple Kush and LA Confidential are most likely to produce couch-lock. Indica-dominant hybrids with limonene or pinene as secondary terpenes provide relaxation with reduced risk of couch-lock.

Which strains are best for first-time users?

Blueberry (indica, 15–20% THC) is the most commonly recommended strain for first-time cannabis users. Its moderate potency and gentle onset produce manageable relaxation without overwhelming effects. Granddaddy Purple and Northern Lights are also beginner-appropriate. Start with one to two small inhalations and wait 15 minutes before consuming more.

Can I use cannabis for sleep?

Indica strains with high myrcene content — including Purple Kush, Northern Lights, and Granddaddy Purple — are commonly used as sleep aids. THC reduces the time it takes to fall asleep and increases time in deep sleep stages. For sleep use, consume 30–90 minutes before intended bedtime via inhalation (flower or pre-roll). Edibles for sleep should be consumed 90–120 minutes before bed.

Can cannabis help with pain?

Cannabis interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system to modulate pain perception and reduce inflammation. Indica strains with beta-caryophyllene — the only terpene that binds directly to CB2 cannabinoid receptors — provide the most targeted pain relief. Bubba Kush, LA Confidential, and Northern Lights are commonly recommended for pain management. Cannabis topicals provide localized pain relief without psychoactive effects.

What is the difference between flower, pre-rolls, edibles, and concentrates?

Flower is dried cannabis buds sold by weight, consumed via pipe, bong, or rolled into joints. Pre-rolls are ready-made joints — convenient with no preparation required. Edibles are cannabis-infused food products (gummies, chocolates, beverages) that take 60–120 minutes to take effect and last 4–8 hours. Concentrates are extracted cannabis products (wax, shatter, live resin) with higher potency than flower. Each format offers different onset times, durations, and potency levels.
